Southeast Colorado has a very rich heritage of many cultures living on the land or passing through the region. Judy Arnold, history professor at Lamar Community College and member of the Prowers Prairie Pride Action Team, researched the number of countries and cultures that have claimed this region at one time. Spain and France each staked claims twice. Texas, Mexico, U.S. Territory, Cheyenne Indian Reserve, and the State of Colorado complete the list of those flying flags over the region. To represent the presence of the Cheyenne and to acknowledge other Indian groups that made southeast Colorado home through the centuries, a photograph taken by a local artist, Norma Verhoeff, of Charlie Little Coyote was used. PCDI made a contribution to the Cheyenne Tribe for the use of this photograph.
The horse has enabled all cultures to live on the land in this region. They were essential to a variety of transportation modes and in helping ranchers control herds of cattle. Today they are used both for utilitarian work and for recreation and show.
Variations of the new logos are highlighted in full color designs. We hope you like the “new image” possibilities these designs afford the region. If you would like to make application for use of any part of the designs, please contact the PCDI office at 719.336.2384 or Contact us via e-mail at pcdi@procolorado.org
