PCDI Progress Report for 2006-2007

BUSINESS EXPANSION - Prowers County Development, Inc. is committed to actively recruiting new businesses that will enhance economic growth in Prowers County and to supporting existing businesses in retention and expansion. PCDI is recruiting both large and small companies and manufacturers through systematilogo3c assessments and contacts.

ATTRACTIONS - Prowers County Development, Inc. is working with city and county officials coordinating efforts to enhance recreational health-wise activities. Efforts are underway to build a system of multi-use trails, with long-term overview facilitation from the National Park Service.
The Snow Goose Festival this year saw a four-fold increase in attendance over last year, drawing from several states and the Front Range. Avid bird watchers come from all across the country and PCDI is involved in plans to better meet their needs.

TOURISM & ENTREPRENEURSHIP - Prowers County Development, Inc. promotes events that provide opportunities for entrepreneurial enterprise and business development through bringing visitors into the region for a few hours or few days. The region has been supported with state-level consultants regarding economic development, tourism and businesses design. PCDI is working with Lamar Community College in special events development.

SCIENCE - The Pierre Auger Cosmic Ray Observatory Visitor Center will be located on the Lamar Community College campus. With this one-of-a-kind scientific research center in our midst, we must gear up for unprecedented numbers of guests with diverse needs. These scientists will bring stimulating adventures to our region as well as stimulating the economy.

YOUTH RETENTION - Prowers County Development, Inc. is providing collaborative assistance to public schools to assure that the region’s young people have important experiences leading to challenging and rewarding career paths here in southeastern Colorado.

COMMUNICATIONS - Prowers County Development, Inc. is a leader in communicating with companies and corporations already in Prowers County about their needs and in finding ways to enhance working relationships with their managers. PCDI promotes the highest level of technology for the region to facilitate businesses becoming worldwide in scope.

AMBASSADORSHIP - Prowers County Development, Inc. is participating in the planning of educational programs and seminars that will provide “frontline” employees, those individuals who have first contact with visitors and guests, information that will make them good ambassadors for our community and county.

HISTORY & CULTURE - Prowers County Development, Inc. is taking a leadership role in. coordinating efforts that enhance the region’s capability to offer 21st Century quality shopping experiences, cultural events and historical programs, as well as enhancing birding and wildlife watching opportunities. To strengthen the attractiveness, of the region, PCDI is working to integrate existing talent in the arts and music that have income potential into overall economic development plans. PCDI is promoting the diversification of income generating pursuits such as “Value Added Agricultural” enterprises. Tour companies and dude ranching opportunities are opening throughout southeast Colorado.

PROMOTIONS - Prowers County Development, Inc. has established the means to promote the region for visiting groups, families and conferences. Colorado Green recently sponsored the inclusion of the wind farm and other notable sites in the Wind Power Trails map and audio CD, soon to be available at the Colorado Welcome Center.

STAFF - Prowers County Development, Inc. has increased staffing three-fold from May 2004 to June 2005, through the combined contributions of the, City of Lamar, Prowers County Commissioners and private business partnerships. PCDI has proven to be capable of public trust and is being supported by the community for planning and activities taking the county in the right direction.

RESOURCES - Prowers County Development, Inc. is a leader in communications, planning, and the fundraising necessary to support activities important for future development and enrichment projects.

GOALS: JOBS, PROMOTION & VITALITY - Prowers County Development, Inc., is working continuously to seek better job opportunities for residents in the region, as well as upgrade first visual impressions that visitors have of our communities. We look forward to improving educational and health-building opportunities in ‘ pleasing settings that will encourage people to stay and to move’ here from elsewhere. Soon, PCDI will have a working website designed to facilitate businesses, travelers and residents.

WHAT CAN YOU DO? Think on these things and take a tour of your community. Think about possibilities and think about existing assets. Imagine what role you can play in developing these assets.

ASSETS - Already existing are parks, growing recreational opportunities, higher education and training, expanding healthcare service and facilities, a fascinating history, affordable housing, museums’, lakes, advanced technology, exportation of renewable energy, new library, ongoing traditions of square dance, festivals, and service organizations that bond communities to their past, improved public school facilities, developing Ports-to-Plains Transportation corridor, easy and quick access to all amenities, beautiful neighborhoods, great people with diverse backgrounds, and wonderful skies and sunsets!

As we continue to work together, expanding community vitality serving the interests of businesses, residents and visitors will unfold.
