Prowers County and Southeast Colorado
Prowers County is located in the southeastern corner of Colorado on the Kansas-Colorado border. The county is named in honor of John Wesley Prowers, a leading pioneer in the lower Arkansas valley region. The county is 1,645 square miles with an average elevation of 3,600 feet. The county population was 14,483 at U.S. Census 2000. The county seat is Lamar.
The PCDI office is located at the intersection of two transcontinental highways, Highway 287 north/south and Highway 50 east/west. Highway 287 is now part of the Ports-to-Plains Federal Project connecting Mexico and Canada.
In Prowers County, there are 15 properties and districts listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This includes one National Historic Landmark, the Granada War Relocation Center.
